I love reading about different places and times in history, so I really wanted to like this book. American hero, half-Mexican heroine, Alamo setting - sounds like there could be a lot of story there, doesn't it? Unfortunately, the setup of the "heroine forced to spy" portion of the plot felt contrived, and much of the dialogue seemed a little too modern for the story. The ratio of showing to telling also wasn't favorable and in the end, I just couldn't attach myself to the characters or to the story action, so I gave up about halfway through. I have another book from this series(American Tapestry) to try, and hopefully that one will work a little better for me.
